The Barrowlands biggest ever bar takings was during a Charlie & the Bhoys concert a few years back. Now I bet that doesn't surprise anyone as three quarters of it ends up on the floor.

STORY - JOCK STEIN

At 339 Glasgow Road in the Burnbank district of Hamilton on the 5th of October 1922, John Stein was born with a 'lucky cap', an extra flap of skin which the Lanarkshire mining community believed brought good luck.

Stein was certainly destined to greatness. His playing career took two unexpected turns which resulted in him leading Celtic to League and Cup glory. And as manager he surpassed even those achievements tenfold.

The young Stein worked down the pit as a 'Bevan Boy' and played centre-half as a part-timer for both Blantyre Victoria and Albion Rovers, making over 200 League appearances for the Coatbridge club.

In January 1950, in dispute with Rovers, he decided on full-time football. He moved to Wales to play for Llanelly Town an might have stayed in Welsh football but for a break-in at his house in Hamilton which saw him return to Scotland to sort out the mess.

That piece of misfortune had a silver lining. Thanks to chief scout Jimmy Gribben, Celtic signed Jock Stein in December 1951, as an experienced player to help develop the youth policy at the club.

A second freakish stroke of fortune in his first week at Parkhead saw regular pivots Mallon and Boden both injured and Stein pushed into the side as a stop-gap replacement.

He never looked back, proving a natural leader as he skippered 'The Bhoys' to Coronation Cup success in 1953, and to a League and Cup double the following year.

Stein, a tactically sound centre-half, became renowned for his defensive clearances with the knee, but an ankle injury sustained in a League Cup tie at Parkhead against Rangers in August 1955 saw the beginning of the end of his playing career.

An attempted rehabilitation failed and he wore a Celtic jersey for the last time against Coleraine in a close season match in 1956.

Stein, whose one representative honour was to play for the Scottish League against the Football League at Stamford Bridge on the 28th of April 1954 remained with Celtic, coaching the Reserves. He later moved to Dunfermline Athletic in 1960 to embark upon a remarkable career as a manager.
